Make Time To Network!

Some of the banking organizations are having a tough time staying afloat. It's not bad enough that they are losing part of their membership because of cutbacks and mergers, but the bankers that are eligible to join and attend are staying away from meetings. The reasons could be varied-overworked, no budget, or no support from the institution. But the loss of the information and ideas shared at those meetings is a loss that is detrimental to both the banker and the institution.

Networking is one of the most important parts of your banking career. You not only need it for encouragement, but also for the sharing of ideas and the reassurance that your problems are not unique. There are others who do the same job you do in other institutions that may have found ways to solve your problems. They may provide you with short-cuts and innovative solutions. Someone may have researched some new technology that will solve the very problem you have been tackling for weeks.

You also get the chance to build powerful means of communication with people in other institutions. There is no way you can downplay the importance of those contacts. They are important to you in the way you do your job for your institution and to your career.

I'm concerned with the refrain we are hearing these days-"I'm too busy to network! I'm doing the equivalent of two jobs. Something had to give. So I stopped going to the meetings / seminars / workshops / etc…" "My institution no longer pays my dues so I dropped out."

Bad mistake!

This is not the time to put off networking or education. Delegate some of your chores, if you must. Or plan to attend even part of a meeting-the "get together" part-where you can chat with folks from other financial institutions. Skip the dinner if you feel you can't spare the time, or can't afford it. But go and meet those bankers. Don't shortchange your capabilities or your career. Those contacts and the ideas and information you absorb are important. Make time for meeting, sharing and networking with other bankers-not only for the sake of the organizations involved but for your own. Networking is important to you and your career.
