African-American Heroes On Checks
Our customers can now order checks that have pictures on them of famous African-Americans.
The pictures of five famous black Americans are printed in the center of the checks in the new series: Frederick Douglass, who was an abolitionist; Madam C. J. Walker, who was a pioneer in the hair care industry; Booker T. Washington, educator and founder of Tuskagee University; George Washington Carver, who was an agricultural chemist, and pan- Africanist Marcus Garvey.
Marshall Johnson, of Memphis, Tennessee, originated and designed the checks. When he first had the idea, he wanted to see these pictures of famous black Americans on United States currency.
But before he got too far with that project, three major check printers-John H. Harland Co., Deluxe Checks, Inc., and Liberty Check Printers-bought licensing rights from Mr. Johnson, and printed the pictures on the checks, which they now offer to their clients.
There are several benefits a financial institution realizes if they offer these checks to their customers. First, of course, it is a special product that can be offered. In addition, some experts think that making the checks available to our customers shows the desire on the part of the financial institution to oblige minority customers. It is evidence that the bankers are making a serious attempt to serve minority communities.
Along with other community involvement and projects, offering these checks show that a financial institution is trying to achieve the real spirit of the Community Reinvestment Act.
