Security Survey:How Many Hats?
A short time ago we asked our subscribers who were security officers to answer some questions about their jobs. Although it's not an official survey, we were interested in the results. We've been including the answers to a couple of questions each month.
This issue we looked at the answers to the questions:
What percentage of your work is dedicated to security?
Besides security, what other hats do you wear?
As could be expected, in financial institutions with under $100 million in assets, less than 11% of the security officer's work was dedicated to security functions. The least amount of time was reported in two institutions where the security officer wrote that they spent only 2% of their time on security matters.
The largest institutions (over $250 million) had the security officers who spent the most time-all the way up to 100%. The average time spent on security in this group was 66.54%-two thirds of their time. The least amount of time spent on security in the larger institutions was one respondent from an over-$500-million-in-assets bank who said he spent 10% to 20% of his time dedicated to security.
Perhaps the most interesting responses of our survey came from the question about what other hats you wear.
The most frequently mentioned "other hat" was that of compliance, including the Bank Secrecy Act.
Astonishingly, however, the second most common "second" job held by the security officer is that of internal auditor.
Other responsibilities included disaster recovery, operations, training, administration, personnel, purchasing, legal, and marketing.
The most unusual combination is that of security officer with the duties of investments, appraiser, item processing, IRA's and managing a commercial loan portfolio!
Titles of security officers, by the way, range from a non-officer status position to Executive and Senior Vice Presidents, and a few Presidents.
