It's A Beginning…
Computer chip cards that hold cash value, issued by US West Communications, can now be purchased at drug stores, student bookstores, and other such retail outlets in Seattle.
The cards can now be used for telephone calls and, in the future, other small cash purchases. Future plans also call for their use to pay for parking and transportation.
The cards, similar in looks to credit cards, cannot be used after their stored value is used up. But future developments will probably make the cards rechargeable.
Pay phones are now being installed that will accept the cards by US West Communications in the cities of Seattle, WA; Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN; Denver, CO; and Portland, Oregon.
