"May I See Your License, Please?"
There is a new computer system now being used by the Office of Motor Vehicles in many states that incorporates important security features into the driver's license.
For instance, some new licenses have a hologram that is difficult to copy.
Some have tamperproof ink that will run if the license is cut.
The most important innovation, however, is a system that stores pictures of all the drivers. When the license is renewed or replaced, the picture will appear on the computer screen for comparison. This will (hopefully) cut down the issuance of driver's licenses to impostors. Police officers, in some cases, will also have the capability of swiping the license and pulling up the picture of the driver on their own car's mobile computer unit.
For financial institutions that use the driver's license as part of acceptable identification, this is all good news. We have been aware for a long time that fraudulent licenses are an important common piece of ID used as the basis for opening a bad account. Any steps toward preventing their issuance or availability are welcome.
