Yes, It's Safe

What's the difference between handing your credit card to a waiter (and having him disappear for fifteen minutes); giving the credit card number over a telephone line for a purchase; or using special codes and software between credit card holders and merchants to shop on the Internet?

The biggest difference is that the safest, most secure way of using your credit card is over the Internet.

Visa and Mastercard are now using the SET standard by which consumers make secure purchases over the Internet. It is expected to become the dominant means of network shopping.

SET stands for Secure Electronic Transaction. Developed with partners which included GTE, IBM, Microsoft and Netscape, SET is already in use in Europe. It has links to existing processing systems, and millions of credit card accounts through Visa and Mastercard.

Catalogs and ordering capabilities will both be available for armchair shopping in the United States in the very near future, according to Visa International.
