Smart Card Developments

Three quarters of people polled by a special study commissioned by the Smart Card Forum said they were extremely, very or somewhat interested in the smart card concept. About 31 percent were very or extremely interested. FIND/SVP, a New York-based research and consulting firm, conducted the study. It talked to 14 focus groups and conducted a telephone survey of 2,400 people.

Of the about one third that said they would definitely want smart cards, the following categories of possible use were top ranking: 74 percent indicated interest in medical alert information, 62 percent wanted health insurance identification, 59 percent said they would use them as bank cards, 56 percent said they would make good drivers licenses and 53 percent said they would use them as credit cards. Not surprisingly, those most interested fit the early technology adopters profile: younger, higher incomes, computer literate, etc. The responders said that convenience and security were the most attractive features of smart cards, and those most interested indicated they'd be willing to pay up to $50 to obtain a card and $25 as an annual fee.

A copy of the study's results is available at
