California Girls Get A Better Chance
Union Bank of California is funding a program that will help give girls from public housing a chance to follow their dreams.
The program is called, simply, Girls 2000. It provides 20 teenage girls an after-school program. They receive academic tutoring, individual counseling, health and fitness classes, nutritional counseling, life skills training, computer training and employment services. They are also encouraged to attend college.
The bank says it was looking for positive alternatives to juvenile delinquency, crime, unemployment, unwanted pregnancies, domestic violence, drug abuse and other problems prevalent in the projects.
