More On Banking At The Microwave

Bankers Hotline received additional information on a high technology development that has the potential to change the face of everyday banking, shopping, and cooking!

NCR Corporation's Microwave Bank was demonstrated live at the Retail Delivery '98 show in Las Vegas, and NCR said several major banks have indicated interest.

The product really is a microwave - it can cook up a feast.

But it also serves as a home banking center and a pathway to the Internet. It allows users access to their bank accounts to transfer funds, arrange debit transactions, check balances and pay bills. They also can surf the 'net or shop online.

It even has a nifty little feature that makes a grocery list of items as the kitchen runs low. Users swipe the bar codes of empty bottles or cans, then the machine notes that the kitchen is out of that ingredient. Users can then put a shopping list together and send it online to any of the major grocery store chains on the World Wide Web.

The microwave works either by talking to it or by touching it. Touch screen technology has been built into the LCD display in the oven door, and voice recognition technology eliminates the need for a keyboard.

The software used also has an intelligent agent that stores and processes all requests so that the microwave gets to know its users' lifestyle such as whether the person uses low-fat ingredients. That information can be used to flag deals on the Internet or to suggest product choices.

Sensar says that people will be comfortable using their microwaves as banking and web centers because the appliances are in the kitchen, where people are used to getting things done.

Actually, we anticipate problems like the roast drying to a brick-like texture because the cook is busy surfing the web!
