Report ID Theft

Write down this number and pass it on to all of your bank customers: (877) ID-THEFT. (877) 438-4338.

That's the toll-free number the Federal Trade Commission created as a hotline for victims of identity theft. They can report the crime and get advice from telephone counselors trained on what to do to prevent erosion of accounts and credit.

The number is part of a three-step program FTC has. The other parts are an online, secure location for reporting such information (www.consumer.gov/idtheft) and a national consumer educational campaign. Congress mandated that FTC be a national clearinghouse for reporting ID Theft.
