Hispanic Bank Site
A financial holding company in Florida has applied with regulators to purchase an Orlando-based bank that will enable it to start the nation's first virtual bank geared to the Hispanic population.
A site has already been launched by BI Financial that offers a wide variety of financial advice, chat rooms, free e-mail, and some innovative features such as Safe Deposit Registry, an area where members can electronically store information about important documents. Membership to the site is free.
The site and the bank are aimed at the burgeoning population of Hispanics, the fastest growing minority in the country. The bank site says there are 34 million Latinos in the United States, that 70 percent are foreign born and that 68 percent are younger than 34 so they are technologically savvy. The site is geared to that population with information they may need such as Frequently Asked Questions about how to keep in touch with people back home and what they will need to secure credit and accounts in the U.S. The virtual bank will offer traditional banking products, but also products geared to the Hispanic population such as mortgages for non-citizens and family joint savings accounts.
