Smart Cards Go to School
It's possible that one of the first places that smart cards will be accepted for common use in the U.S. will be college campuses.
Campus Pipeline, a provider of Intranet technology to a number of the nation's major universities, and CyberMark, a smart card developer, have entered an alliance it says will mean that many college campuses will soon offer their students a smart card that acts as an identification card for access to most campus facilities. At first, the cards will be used for identification and security. However, they eventually will be capable of issuing digital certificates, accessing merchant loyalty programs, and serving as transit passes, electronic purses, voting applications, and parking system access cards.
