Education Against ID Theft
Hibernia Bank, New Orleans, believes one of the best tools against identity theft is to educate potential victims. To help in that effort, the bank is distributing two brochures on fraud prevention - one aimed at consumers, the other for businesses. It is also making its resident experts available to speak to consumer and community groups about the crime.
The brochures describe how the crime works and suggest ways to prevent it as well as who to contact if it occurs. They also will be available online (see www.hiberniabank.com).
West Coast Bank, Lake Oswego, Oregon, also is educating potential victims, though its audience is more focused: it is holding seminars for the elderly. The bank sponsored a workshop attended by more than 90 senior citizens from its area. West Coast partnered with the local sheriff's office and the Oregon Bankers Association to offer the program, which focused on what identity theft is and how to prevent it.
