Honoring Those Of The Community
Although the events don't usually make national news, many of the nation's banks choose to serve their communities through gifts that honor people in the community or fulfill a local need.
For example, Cal Fed Bank, Los Angeles, celebrated Black History Month by buying and displaying a serigraph of the famous picture "Quiet Courage," which depicts Rosa Parks refusing to relinquish her seat on a bus in 1955. The picture is signed by the 89-year-old Parks and displayed in the lobby of one of the bank's branches. Its unveiling drew a number of dignitaries, as well as artist Jameel Rasheed.
County Bank, an independent community bank in Merced, CA, recently honored local athletes by donating a much-needed score board to its local university, Stanislaus University. It then offered its customers half-off admission if they showed their checkbooks at the doors of the game at which the scoreboard was presented.
To combat the high percentage of crime against Hispanics in the Ft. Worth, TX area, a number of financial institutions joined with the Forth Worth Police Department in an outreach program designed to teach those living in Hispanic neighborhoods how to avoid becoming victims. Those financial institutions included Surety Bank N.A., Bank One, City Credit Union, First State Bank, JP Morgan Chase Bank, and Wells Fargo.
