How do you fit into the neighborhood when it's an upscale, urbanite, ultra-hip scene and you're a traditional suburban community bank? West Coast Bank, Portland, OR says by transforming into an art gallery and offering special services to local residents.
The bank opened a branch in the Pearl District of Portland in an historic warehouse. The branch has an agreement with a local gallery to display paintings, sculptures, and photographs. The lobby is designed to fit in with the other galleries in the neighborhood, and it stays open the one night every three weeks those galleries also are open.
Because most of the residents in the area don't own cars, but rather walk to destinations, the bank is also offering several conveniences including dry cleaning and shoe repair. The bank isn't making a profit on either the artwork or the convenience services. However, it says the extra touches carry forth a banking philosophy to support surrounding communities.
