States Looking at ATM Emergency Bills
Several of the nation's states are considering bills that would mandate beefed up security at automated teller machines. In New York the assembly is considering a bill that would require emergency 911 lines installed at all ATMs. Opponents of the bill, however, say they'd rather spend the $750 such a line would cost on better lighting or cameras.
In Illinois, the legislature is considering a measure that would allow reverse personal identification numbers to be used at ATMs. Reverse PINs allow ATM users to enter their numbers in reverse order when they are being robbed, which allows the machine to dispense cash while sending a silent message to a security company or local police.
