With more and more bank loan interviews and trust appointments taking place outside the banking office using a laptop, the FBI warns the banking industry they are as vulnerable as any to laptop theft.
In 2001 approximately 591,000 laptops were reported stolen in the U.S. In 2002 there were 620,000 more computers stolen. One study showed that more than 65% of corporations, including the financial industry, had reported stolen laptops.
We are advised that one of the most often overlooked security measures is the simple precaution of property marking, which has been proven to be highly effective in combating computer theft. Whether done by permanent marker, engraving, or labels, it seems a simple solution to the serious problem of lost data and information. Bankers would be wise to heed the advice of the Federal Bureau.
