Bank is Top Innovator

Washington Mutual, Seattle, recently bested some of the nation's largest companies to be named by Fortune Magazine as the No. 1 company nationally for innovation. The bank began opening financial center stores in 2000 and now has more than 780 new and modeled stores throughout the U.S. The stores have a welcoming environment, replacing teller windows with Khaki-clad concierges who greet customers and escort them to the appropriate service area. Many of them also have retail and play areas. The bank also was one of the first in the nation to offer free checking and to have talking automated teller machines for vision-impaired customers that speak either English or Spanish. The financial institution beat out such corporations as Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, UPS and Nike to receive the honor.
