Free Tax Help
Financial institutions in the San Francisco area joined forces with community groups to offer free tax return preparation services to the Bay Area's working poor through a program called Earn It! Keep It! Save It! organized by United Way of the Bay Area. The program trained 1,000 volunteers to help workers who earn $35,000 or less to complete their tax forms and file claims. The program was started because $35 million in federal tax credits went unclaimed in the Bay Area last year. Much of that was because low-income residents were unaware of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
