Some financial institutions and card companies are offering their customers a free service that protects their credit cards during online transactions.
Holders of cards from Citibank, MBNA or Discover can request a temporary one-time-use number for online shopping as well as shopping by telephone or mail order. The temporary numbers are linked to customer accounts, but expire after the transaction is completed.
The numbers are available through software that is downloaded and used upon request or triggered automatically when a web site moves to the checkout page. In the case of Citibank, users can go online to the bank each time they need a new number.
