Converted ATMs
A team of organized criminals is installing equipment on legitimate automated teller machines that both steals the ATM card number and captures images of Personal Identification Numbers. A piece of equipment is attached to the front of the ATM where a card would be inserted. The new insertion slot steals the card number. At the same time, a nearby "brochure holder" has a PIN-reading camera that captures an image of the legitimate PIN. The thieves then copy the cards and use the numbers to quickly withdraw thousands of dollars from many accounts. A University of Texas web site shows pictures of how it's done.
