Cards May Just Be Going Flat
In the past few years, the nation has seen a number of unusual shapes and sizes for credit cards including keychain lobs, mini-cards and see-through cards. The next thing to come down the pike may well be cards without raised lettering.
MasterCard International and Visa International have told card issuers that unembossed cards are now okay as long as they meet certain electronic authorization requirements. The new look is made possible because most merchants have replaced manual swipe terminals with electronic contact terminals for point-of-sale transactions.
Flat cards are already in use in several other countries. Participation in the U.S. will be voluntary and partly dependent on how comfortable consumers are with the new look.
