Tool Allows Consumers to Check Out Web Sites
A new tool by GeoTrust, Inc., the world's second largest issuer of digital security certificates for the Web, allows consumers to battle online identity theft and credit card fraud themselves by checking out the legitimacy of a web site before they enter financial or personal information.
The free product can be easily downloaded by a user as an extension of that user's browser. It allows the user to enter any Website address or domain name into a search box and receive a verification rating that includes what security standards the website has.
The tool checks the integrity of the domain name to reveal spoofing, compares the site against a variety of blacklist databases, and displays a green, yellow or red light. A green light means the site is secure, is using a valid certificate from a WebTrust source and is not one of the published blacklists. Yellow means the site cannot be verified, but is not included on blacklists. Red means the site matches with a blacklist.
