Blank Counter Deposit Slips
Question: I would like to ask a security operations question. We are discussing the use of blank counter deposit slips in bank lobbies. I feel this is a security issue and shouldn't be done. Can you give me security reasons why this isn't a good practice or do other banks do this and it really isn't a security issue?
Answer: It's a HUGE security issue, and deposit slips have disappeared from most bank lobbies for that reason. They make it really easy for the fraud artist to take a check drawn on some other bank to "split" deposit, using the counter deposit ticket.
They also make a deposit ticket available so that anyone can "tamper" with another person's account, raising the issue of privacy and identity theft. If they have a check issued by that person, all the information is readily available to them on the MICR line of the check.
Security experts all will advise doing away with blank/counter deposit tickets in the lobby of your branch.
