Growing Numbers Adopting Spoof-Proof Systems

More and more companies are adopting the Sender ID Framework, an e-mail protection initiative that guards against spoofing and phishing, according to CipherTrust, which is a major proponent of the method. CipherTrust analyzed 10 million e-mail messages sent through its own security appliance to reach that conclusion.

Sender ID Framework is a tool that seeks to verify that incoming messages are coming from the source claimed by the e-mail. It was developed by the e-mail industry and has been sanctioned by Microsoft and other companies.

The tool works by checking the address of the server sending the mail against a registered list of servers that the domain owner has authorized before the e-mail message is ever delivered. It is one of several authentication methods now in the works. According to CipherTrust, 75 percent more Fortune 1000 businesses (23 more companies) were using Sender ID since August when CipherTrust last conducted a survey.

CipherTrust and several business leaders, including Bank of America, sent a letter to the FTC in November urging the agency's continued support of e-mail authentication methods and Sender ID and issuing a call to other businesses to adopt protection methods.
