Manufacturers are putting into place the technology that will soon allow our bank-by-telephone customers to conduct transactions by cell phone using their fingerprints to both verify and take action.
AuthenTec, a leading fingerprint sensor innovator, recently announced what it calls the world's smallest, most powerful and versatile biometric fingerprint sensor, which has already been designed into several cell phones that will be introduced later this year.
The low-cost sensor offers added security over past technology by scanning below the surface of the skin, instead of using surface images. It also has advanced touch capabilities that allow a person to use a finger or multiple fingers to open and operate phone applications, navigate to places that formerly required keypad touch, and personalize their phones through touch speed dialing. The company also says the technology is rugged, with scratch resistance up to 10 million finger rubs.
