  • The new nickel has the right side of Thomas Jefferson's face. The old one had his left side featured. The written word "liberty" on the coin is actually a copy of Jefferson's handwriting U.S. Mint
  • When the second version of the nickel comes out later this year, it will have William Clark's (Lewis & Clark) quote "Ocean in view! O! The Joy!" which he wrote in his journal on sighting the Pacific. He spelled it 'Ocian' - but the Mint corrected it - they didn't want to confuse people. Ibid.

  • Since December 31, 2004, banks with $34 million or less in assets do not have to collect and report HMDA data.
  • 13% of the 105 million households in the US are unbanked Americans. They are typically immigrants, ethnic minorities, youths, widows, divorcees without credit histories in their own names, and people who have filed for bankruptcy.   • One criminal "Web Mob" called Shadowcrew (now demolished) had 4,000 members who bought and sold social security numbers and ID documents, including passports, driver's licenses and student IDs. They ran a worldwide "store" containing 1.5 million credit card numbers, and 18 million e-mail accounts, and were responsible for more than $4 million in fraud losses. United States Secret Service
  • 9.9 million Americans were identity theft victims in 2004. Of those, 6.6 million reported fraudulent use of existing accounts. More than 3 million reported new accounts opened in their names. These criminal activities cost consumers $5 billion and businesses $48 billion in financial losses.
