Bad Spell
The teller looked at the note pushed over the counter at Bank One in Springfield, Illinois. It read, "be quit" - probably intended to read "be quiet." After she read it, he took it back.
The man then said it was a robbery and told her to give him $1,500.
She said she didn't have that much.
He then said to give him $500.
She said she didn't have that much either.
He said something to the effect of, "Oh well, it was just a joke, anyway," and walked out.
She hit the alarm.
When police picked him up, he might have talked his way out of it as his version vs. hers, except for one thing. In his pocket was a note that read, "be quit." Things got hotter when he was identified as Spencer Powers, 31, and it was discovered he'd served prison time for robbery - in 1994, '97, '98, '99, and 2002.
He was arrested and charged with attempted bank robbery - and bad spelling.
