John L. Stanley wanted to be really authentic in his writing about crime. He had already been to prison for petty crimes, and had lectured and written about crime, but he felt he needed to further his research. So he robbed Commerce Bank in Kansas City, Missouri, because, as he told the judge, he had to "...return to prison to further my study." He said he, "...needed to be secluded and do the things I need to do while I still have the time."
