Preying on Medicare Users
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox warned residents in that state about a new type of fraud that targets senior citizens on Medicare or eligible for such assistance. The telephone callers claim to be able to help enroll a person in some aspect of the program such as drug benefits or they claim the person's Medicare card is about to expire.
Cox said the con artists are taking advantage of recent media attention given to new government programs.
What they are really seeking is personal data including information about bank accounts, credit cards and social security numbers.
