The Magic of Homeownership
Washington Mutual has partnered with Earvin "Magic" Johnson, chairman and CEO of Johnson Development Corporation to kick off a new phase of Solid Start, a commitment to increase homeownership in the nation's underserved communities. It expands the reach of the program from the African American community to members of the Hispanic and Asian communities. The new phase opens new home loan centers in urban neighborhoods nationwide. The centers help people go through a free, four-part financial education and credit building program that takes 12 to 18 months to complete. It pairs prospective homeowners with a Washington Mutual home loan consultant, who guides participants through the program. By the time the participants finish the program, they are on solid ground for owning their own homes. Currently, there are 21 home loan centers in major metropolitan areas and six more will open this year.
