Fighting Phishing with Voice Technology
Authentify, a company that offers automated telephone authentication services, has a new weapon against phishing and pharming that uses voice technology. The BeCertain program allows banks to offer online customers the option of receiving a telephone call to authenticate an online visit to their site.
When a customer first uses the system, BeCertain places an automated call to a telephone number on record with the financial institution. When the call is answered, the customer must speak a security code given to him or her through the web browser. The customer is then prompted to record a voice message by reading a short script also presented in the browser. On subsequent visits to the bank's web site, customers can request playback of their own recorded messages via a phone call to assure them that they are indeed on the bank's legitimate site.
