DC has First Card with Transit Chip
In a first of its kind pilot program, Citigroup Inc.'s credit card customers in the Washington, D.C. area recently received an offer that would allow them to put transit fares and parking fees directly onto a platinum credit card. The new cards have a smart card chip that allows commuters in the area to tap subway and bus fare machines and pay for fees on 33 lots operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Citigroup already mailed the new cards to some current customers and has plans to issue about 20,000 new cards. Commuters can reload the cards at vending machines in subway stations, which put the value on the customers' credit cards.
