Working Through Community Groups
American Express has an ambitious foundation program that is currently helping fund 37 community organizations in 24 states that support a goal of promoting economic independence. For example, the program aids the efforts of a Massachusetts group that teaches low-income people with mental illness how to avoid predatory lending, as well as basic banking, budgeting, recordkeeping and savings skills. In Oakland, the foundation supports a program to teach immigrant women about the U.S. banking and financial system, how to become self-sufficient, and how to help their communities out of poverty. In Chicago, the foundation supports a project that helps women who have left prostitution find a way to long-term financial success.
