Japan Testing Vein Authentication
A Japanese bank, Juhachi Bank in Nagasaki, recently became the first to pilot a program in that country that is testing finger veins as a biometric tool to protect against fraud. The system requires customers to place a fingertip on a sensor. However, instead of reading the finger for a print, the system detects the unique 3D pattern of veins in the finger.
The system was developed by Hitachi and is also being considered for use in the Japanese Post Office.
