Is Hawke Different From Williams?
Julie Williams rapidly established her reputation as a strong proponent of consumer protection in her brief term as Acting Comptroller of the Currency. Now Hawke has the job. Does he hold different views? No. In his recent speech to the Consumer Bankers Association Hawke strongly endorsed the consumer service position taken by Williams.
Williams had stated that "Bankers need to weigh their business decisions…against the reaction those decisions might elicit from the customers and communities they are chartered to serve." Hawke, in stating that Williams made this statement before he had the opportunity, fully endorsed Williams' customer service views.
Most significant, Hawke agrees with Williams that customer service is a safety and soundness issue. So don't expect things to lighten up under Hawke's leadership. For compliance purposes, his agenda is strikingly similar to Williams'.
