Privacy Points To Remember

Most of the compliance and privacy gurus believe that the heat we are seeing in privacy is simply going to get hotter. What you are working on now is only the beginning. Experienced gurus - for example, Rick Fischer, who has been a leading voice on privacy for years - predict that this is only the beginning. Rick has seen similar compliance developments in the past, and his read on this is very likely to be accurate. (Besides, we agree with him!) This is not a process that can be completed and put behind us such as Y2K. This is a huge mass rolling at great speed and gathering momentum.

Consider consumer concerns very carefully in designing and implementing your notice and opt-out procedure. Make sure your approach is balanced. Yes, you can tell customers about the advantages of sharing information, but also recognize that they may not want to be bothered.

Different customers have different attitudes about their privacy. Take this into account in designing your procedures and notices. Above all, respect your customer. They'll be more likely to respect you - and stay with you.
