ID Theft Info

One of the FACT Act responsibilities that has been assigned to the Federal Trade Commission is consumer education about identity theft. In addition, the FTC must provide procedures and model forms for a variety of activities related to identity theft, including disclosures, complaint forms and affidavits. The FTC has put much of this information on the Internet and it is available to all. There are two ways to find it. First, you can log on to the FTC's website, www.ftc.gov. Next, click on the box labeled "consumer" and then choose identity theft. Choices here will take you to a site dedicated to consumer information from the FTC.

You can also access the site more directly by going to the special website at www.consumer.gov/idtheft. This address is dedicated to consumer information about identity theft and what to do.

At this site, the FTC has presented a well-organized document that explains identity theft, how to lower the risk of identity theft, and what steps to take if the consumer's identity is stolen. The text is clear and straightforward. It contains links to other sources of information on the site, and to forms the consumer can use. You might check out this site so that you know what is available to the consumers. Also, if you are familiar with the site, you can more effectively recommend it to your customers.
