Sober, Nimda, Blaster, Slammer, Code Red and My Doom. All of these were Internet worms that spread to hundreds of thousands of systems because system administrators failed to properly apply patches already released to address the vulnerability these worms targeted. Patch management is one of the key essential front line tasks a system administrator must perform on a regular basis. Almost all known virus programs, worms, and Trojans (malware) exploit previously identified software vulnerabilities. These same vulnerabilities are usually fixed and patches supplied long before the exploit becomes malware. Having the patches properly tested and installed as quickly as possible is vital to insuring the security of an institution's vital infrastructure.
