FEMA is making it easy to stay informed about flood map changes. They now offer free e-mail updates on flood mapping activities. If you're doing your own flood hazard determinations, you'll want to plug into the email service, as well as set bookmarks for FEMA's page on Important Information on Recent Map Changes. You can even create online hazard maps, but they cannot be used for your actual flood hazard determination. The online maps are for advisory purposes only.
The FEMA site also provides useful information about flood insurance cost and coverage. And if your customer wants to seek a Letter of Map Amendment ("LOMA") in order to escape the requirement to buy flood insurance, there a special forms and instructions to use for making an application for a LOMA. All these resources are available on the FEMA Web site.
