Military leave
by Mary Beth Guard

Question: What are other banks doing to accommodate employees who are called to active duty?

Answer: From what we've heard, financial institutions around the country are taking a wide range of approaches to ease the burden in the workplace for employees who are suddenly called to active duty. All institutions should familiarize themselves with a federal law, The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), and how it may impact the servicemember's rights.

According to the Department of Labor, "USERRA potentially covers every individual in the country who serves in or has served in the uniformed services and applies to all employers in the public and private sectors." For additional details, review the DOL overview of the law and their 2002 memo on the subject. For complete details, you'll find a training CD ROM in the BOL Banker Store on the subject.
