Not all training takes place in a conference room, school, or by telephone seminar or Webcast. One of the most effective things you can do in the way of informal training is to route around articles (whether from newspapers, Web sites, or newsletters) that address topics your staff needs to be informed about.
For example, if you see a news story that tells of a lawsuit brought against a bank for violation of financial privacy, clip it out. Paste it on a piece of paper. Write a note beside it that tells employees what the lesson of the suit is, or reminds them of a particular procedure you have that, if followed, would have prevented a similar suit against your institution.
If the article is online, utilize the "Refer this article" feature the site probably has. If it lacks that feature, you can use your browser's "Send this page" command to route it to others in your bank.
If you plan to circulate around a paper-based publication, observe any copyright restrictions. Circulate the original, if necessary, to avoid copyright breaches. Consider using a Training/Routing Log like the one on the following page that was developed by Brooke Blake, a retired FBI agent and long-time bank trainer who now provides security consulting. The form will help you document, for the benefit of examiners (and even litigation, heaven forbid) that you have conducted informal training on this subject.
