Ok, so is anyone out here in BOL land an AARP member? I keep getting their cards in the mail to sign up but never have. Is it something that anyone finds useful?

Thanks!

I'm an AARP member, but I have not found it useful. For example, I tried the AARP Expedia site to check car rental prices. The price on the AARP site (compared to regular Expedia) was $1 a day less for one rental company, but a few dollars higher for the rest, so they're just pushing you towards one company, probably a big AARP advertiser. I do skim the magazine, though, for pics of sexy 50 year old celebrities.

My husband and I are. I have not seen a ton of benefits, but we haven't pushed hard for them yet either. We do have their credit card, which was pretty good.

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
they waste a lot of money sending me their information every 6 months when I have no intention of signing up with them. I don't like how they spend the dues.

I am also a member - signed up immediately after I turned 50. I have used discounts when making reservations at some hotels and other events. My parents use them for their supplemental insurance. My husband and I have talked about looking into car insurance through them, but have yet to do so.

Way, way south.
Depending on your political persuasion, AMAC is an alternative to AARP, and they offer similar discounts and special offers.

My husband and I are members and while we probably don't use the membership as much as we could, their magazine and paper have a lot of valuable information. Plus the Senior Safety test was cheaper through them.

I have used mine for discounts on hotels and it has worked out well. I also get a lot of useful information in their magazine.

while I'm not quite old enough to partake in membership, MsGilmore is. After reviewing their discounts, i find that AAA gives me better hotel and car rental discounts than AAA. I am also a member of a number of hotel loyalty programs, those have better discounts than AARP. Many restaurants and businesses also have discounts for those over 50, you simply need to ask.

AMAC member here, I cut up the fake member cards AARP sends me on occasion and return them in the prepaid envelope.

I am guessing that you mean AAA gives me better hotel and car rental discounts than AARP.

I am a AAA member (thanks to SMQ for the idea ages ago!) and enjoy the discounts, but also am not old enough for either AARP or AMAC.

One thing I will say - I despise being inundated with all the AARP mail!

When I was diagnosed with arthritis a few years ago, I made the mistake of making a contribution to the Arthritis Foundation.... uh! They told all their friends too!

Definitely check out their prices if/when you're in the market for medicare supplemental insurance.

I'm a few months shy of eligibility for AARP, and much further away from medicare, but I did have an insurance license for several years before I came back to banking, and AARP was absolutely the best deal I ever found.
