Any suggestions on the best way to ensure that a business "is incorporated or organized under the laws of the US or a State, or is registered as and eligible to do business within the US or a State"? Preferably without having to obtain something directly from the customer. Would info obtained on the Internet be sufficient?

Most bank's utilize the internet and the Secretary of State's office website or whatever appropriate State gov't agency in your jurisdiction if it indicates current registration status. Anything on paper from the customer would be meaningless.
