we had consultants in, and they made the comment that most banks classify time accounts dormant after a longer period of inactivity than demand deposit accounts.
i think instead of "time" they meant savings.
Is that true - do most bank have a different time period for DDA vs Savings?

We used 182 days for each.

I believe our DDA's go dormant after 6 months and Savings after 1 Year.

Dormancy is defined by State law. The time frame for considering an account inactive is totally up to the bank.

A friendly amendment, I think rlcarey meant that the time frames for "abandoned," not "dormant" accounts are established by state law. Dormancy is a matter of bank policy.

Whether your bank has differing time frames for transaction vs. savings accounts is up to you. Assuming that a "dormant" label generates some protections for the account rather than just a fee opportunity, it does make sense that a transaction account would be classified as dormant within a shorter period of time than a savings account.
