Mother was representative payee for her adult son. The mother has died. How do we handle this account? Should the SS benefits that have been direct deposited since the mother's death be returned?

The benefits are still the adult son's. You should hold the funds in the account until Social Security appoints a new rep payee. The new payee should bring in their appointment letter at which point you can have that individual sign a new signature card.
