Convince management to do what we're doing. Close all day on Christmas Eve this year, because it's on Friday and give employees a three day weekend. We're very excited. And what about your customers that need to go to the bank for some last minute shopping money? Although the employees love this idea, it is HORRIBLE for customer service.

which is why you put notices up 30 days prior and ATMs were invented... There are plenty of customers without ATM cards or need services that ATMs cannot perform. Even though the notice is put up 30 days prior, you may have a customer who does not see it, forgets, or runs into a jam and needs to come in. I don't see any way around it, closing on the EVE of a holiday is just poor customer service. You should be in business to serve your customers, not do what makes the employees happy.

Most of the banking clients I have known that don't like ATM/debit cards always have a pretty good supply of cash (because they live a cash based life). I am more concerned about the non-clients that may need to cash payroll checks because it is Friday and likely that is when they will be paid. True, they can go to Walmart and enrich them with a check cashing fee, but many would rather use the payroll company bank.
I hate to say it, but I vote for open 1/2 day, closing at noon.

Of course, using your argument, one could say that there are businesses that could need cash on Sunday, so should banks be open then? I know of at least 2 that have done Sunday hours...

I'm with you, Happy. Last year we were open half day on Christmas Eve and had 2 customers. They were shocked we were open. We will again work half day on Christmas Eve this year, but do not expect a lot of traffic in the bank.

Do banks close the day BEFORE Mardi Gras, Crawfish Festival, Tarpon Rodeo, etc? I highly doubt it. Christmas Eve is not a holiday. It is the day before a holiday. More importantly as someone mentioned, it is a Friday, you are going to have people that can't deposit or cash their paycheck. Of course the employees are happy, they are given the day off when they know they should be working.

Mardi Gras, many close 1/2 day the day before, those on the parade route close early throughout the carnival season. Other ones, yes, they close Friday for a weekend festival... bank in neighboring town is closed today for the Wooden Boat Festival that runs this weekend...maybe we're just a different breed down here

No guilt here. With assessments and tight margins it's tough to award bonuses this year, so we thought this would be a nice way for management and members to show their appreciation for the hard work of the staff this year. We've already posted signs and the members are commenting that they think it's great. (One complaint so far.) The only thing that can't be done when we're not open is cash a third party check. With online banking, mobile banking, audio response, debit cards, etc. there's very little that can't be done if we close for one extra day. Employees have to put up with a lot...about 10% of people are not so nice, the cost of health insurance keeps going up, several of our employees have spouses out of work, etc. Sometimes you can do something to thank the people that show up and put their happy faces on every day and help our members. I'm proud of my employees and I'm proud of the reaction of my members. Merry Christmas to all of you a little in advance!

We have always worked a half day on Christmas Eve, with very little traffic in the bank. We pay our staff for a full day and they do not have to use vac or sick time. Ditto. Except we only get paid for actual time worked on Christmas Eve. To get paid for a full week we have to make up the time by coming in early or staying late during the week.

We close at 12:00 on Christmas Eve, we have to use a full days vacation if we take that day off. If you schedule your vacation in a week that has any holiday and the bank is closed, that holiday is counted as one of our vacation days, so basically you are giving one of your vacation days away. Ditto here.

You need to check your State law, if you are a State bank. If it is not holiday, you might need to notify your State agency. If you are a National Bank, I'm not sure it is allowed to close for the whole day that you are normally open without permission.

We are closing all day on the 24th. I checked our state law and found the following:
(1) The first day of January (New Year's Day), Easter Sunday, the last Monday in May (Memorial Day), the fourth day of July (Independence Day), the first Monday in September (Labor Day), the fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day), and the twenty-fifth day of December (Christmas) of each year are holidays on which banks shall close. If New Year's Day, Independence Day, or Christmas falls on a Saturday or Sunday, either the preceding Friday or the succeeding Monday shall also be observed as a holiday and the offices of banks closed.
Doesn't this sound as if we are supposed to take a Fri. or Mon. off when those days fall on Sat. or Sun.?
