A Bichon Frise! Great temperaments, great with people and kids and the part I liked best was you did not need a shovel to clean up. Typically, their stool is hard and you simply pick up with a paper towel.

Here's some info on Basenjis:

I don't think the dog on the top of this page is a very good looking one--I liek the brown ones.

If I was in the market for a dog, (whichi I'm not, I already have 85 pounds of K-9) and I had a bankroll, this is what I would get.

My mom is a dog fanatic but she always comes back aroudn to obsessing over these. There was a kennel out here that bred them btu they moved (I think) to Texas.

Where the heart is
Both my dogs are pound hounds - one is a Corgi-mix and the other is a Keeshond mix. And they get along great with the 3 cats we also got from the pound.

Corgi-mix would have no problem with stairs. One warning though with Corgi's - they do SHED!

Boat'n - we have a 13 year old basenji. She is totally different than the others. She is a red/white and is very cat-like, doesn't have your typical doggie odor - however she is higher maintenance than the others - by far. She thinks she's a person, doesn't like to go outside by herself (we have a dog door). She is spoiled rotten and demands/commands a lot. We've toyed with the idea of getting another, but due to her grumpy demeanor I don't think we will.

papillons are awesome. I have an English Springer Spanial, Bitchin' Frizzy, Maltese and 2 Papillons. Sticking with the Paps. They do shed, but it's the only bad thing about them. They are great with kids, adults, cats, puppies, etc.

Said my piece about the pound hounds (and believe it). But if i were to so silly (for me) as to actually purchase and expensive full bred animal.......Tibetin Mastiff!
Very cool, very big. Refuse to be trained for menial tasks (no fetching). They are above such things. They are loyal to a fault and are most patient with young persons and puppies. And they have a growl and bark that sounds like it came from the deepest, darkest part of the infernal regions! Very handsom animals

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Here is a link to the Havanese Rescue site. You can see what they look like, learn all about them, and take a quiz to see if you would be a good fit. One thing tho - Our dog is home alone about 4 hours at the time - I go home for lunch every day. He seems to be good with that and keeping him on that schedule helped with the potty training.

Looking for my sanity
E.G.B. - I'd recommend a German Shepherd, but it may be too big of a dog for you. We got ours from a local pound 11 years ago when she was about a year old, she weighs about 80 lbs. She is the most amazing dog ever, some vets have said she's a purebred and a breeder told us that she might have some lab in her, either way the best dog ever. They do shed all year long so that's a consideration. She's amazing with our 6 year old daughter, very gentle. They are very smart and loyal. She loves being outside and does fine in the heat here, anywhere from 90 to 100 degrees in the summer.
