What the heck is a "personal holiday"? Aren't these declared by states and the federal government?
I can't declare a pesonal holiday! No wonder Australia was a penal colony!

As I work in Australia - which is different to all of you - I was interested in the difference in what we refer to as 'Annual Leave'. In my Bank, we are allowed 22 days holidaysVacation/PTO per year..and that does not include the 10 Public HolidaysFederal Holidays...or sick leave (12 days)..or long service leave. (As I have been in the bank for 15 years, I'm eligible for Long Service Leave of 13 weeks)
Yes, I am gloating. But, how about you? Is that better? though still not sure what Long Service Leave equates too.

Long service leave is an additional employee vacation payable after long periods of service with an employer in Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, unlike many other countries, employees are generally entitled to additional leave, known as long service leave, over and above their annual leave if they stay with a particular employer for a certain length of time. A common entitlement in Australia is that employees who remain with a particular employer for ten years will receive an entitlement of eight and two-thirds weeks' (two calendar months) paid leave and more on a pro-rata basis the longer they stay with that employer. This amount was originally thirteen weeks (three months) after fifteen years in most states until recent years. In the Australian Capital Territory, Australia, an employee is entitled to pro-rata long service leave after seven years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_service_leaveThanks wiki

Thanks Loralie - For the 'translation'. Its quite amusing to see Americans live up to their reputations (not being able to relate to the rest of the world). Good luck to all those applying for jobs in Australia - you need to be aware of the major downside - you will have to work alongside Australians. As I am a New Zealander, I can tell you how painful this can be.
PS: Manimal - I cannot help but laugh every time I see that profile pic...its hilarious.

My little brother recently completed a semester at UTAS in Hobart, via his college's foreign exchange program. He got more from the cultural exchange than the actual studies, but loved touring the area and the mainland during his breaks. I told him if he decides to go back, he has to take me with him!

Looked into immigrating to New Zealand or Australia, they have some pretty strict rules. I'm too old apparently.

Other countries have standards on who they wish to let in yet alone stay.
Convicts can not go to England.

They fear the old folks can't hold their own in the heat, and in the event of a kangaroo encounter that results in a boxing match. You are too much of a liability!

PS: Manimal - I cannot help but laugh every time I see that profile pic...its hilarious. I'm happy errbody likes it! It makes me snicker too. Whenever I see it I want to throw my hands up in the air and say in a guilty voice "I wasn't doing anything!" I keep thinking of the bad dog in Balto. And I want to say, "Quit staring at me, I didn't do it"

HappyGilmore; Nice work on taking offence, and the counter-quip. Seeing as I didnt get a torrent of similar responses from everyone else, I think they understood the intent (i.e. gentle ribbing) Unfortunately you didnt. I apologise for upsetting you.
And yes..New Zealanders (not Zealenders) are standoffish. We dont have a problem with that.
