Is the original note in a residential mortgage transaction required to be returned to the borrower when the loan is paid off? If there is, is there a required timeframe for it to be sent to the borrower?

I'm not sure if it's a requirement but within 60 days of payoff we send them a formal letter with their note, mortgage and proof that the mortgage has been released of record.
